Le Tour – La Route 2014!

The route has been announced but still lacks details of the exact roads and towns it passes through.

The great news is – on Friday the 25th July and Saturday 26th July Le Tour revisits the Dordogne department for the first time since 2006! And there will be two stages, a stage 19 finish in Bergerac, and a stage 20 time-trial from Bergerac to Perigueux! This TT (where you will be able to see every competitor ‘contre la montre’ racing against the clock) will most likely determine the eventual winner of the Maillot Jaune and will be an exciting penultimate day of the Tour.

Although stage 19 doesn’t pass the doorstep of La Blanquette the route does pass through Bergerac, which is only just over an hour’s drive away, or three hours relatively flat cycle along the Dordogne!

We are busy working out how we can get to sample the atmosphere at either or both of these stages. Most hotels near the route were booked out last year. Will we cycle or will we drive or get the train? Where will British corner be?! Decisions, decisions!

The exact routes for the two stages will be announced a month or two before the Tour, so we will keep you posted.

Le Tour – 2013

The route for next year’s tour has been announced and we’re already looking forward to the race which starts on June 29th in Corsica. Since the announcement of the route a lot has happened… everyone was wondering (and now it appears confirmed) whether Chris Froome will lead the Sky team with the current champion Wiggo taking a supporting role, Cav has left team Sky and seven years of Tour results have been wiped from the history books following the Lance Armstrong ban.

Unlike this year where we had a great day in Souillac watching stage 18, unfortunately next year the route is not coming that close to La Blanquette. The nearest stage will be stage 7 on July 5th with a finish at Albi (about 200km away). However we would still love to host cycling fans who may be travelling en-route to enjoy the stages in the South of France or simply over here enjoying the atmosphere in the land of Le Tour.

If you are a cycling fan looking for accommodation during the period of the Tour from 29th June to 21st July next year we are offering a special discount – 10% on all our rates. If you would like B&B, gite accommodation or even a stay in one of our luxurious glamping tents, when making your enquiry or booking simply mention ‘Wiggo – Le Patron du Peloton!’ and you will receive a 10% discount when making the final payment for your stay!

(If you’re bringing your bike we have secure storage for when you’re not on the road)

For more information on the 2013 Tour stages, visit the TdF website.

Sarlat Rugby

With the relegation of C.A.Brive last season from the French Top 14 the nearest top-flight rugby teams are now Bordeaux, Toulouse or Agen, sadly all are about two hours drive away.

However, locally the Sarlat team (CASPN – Club  Athlétique  Sarlat  Périgord  Noir) are doing very well, and were promoted last season to Federale 2 in the French Rugby Federation and are consolidating their position very well in the top half of the table.

The stadium (Stade de Madrazes) is very close to La Blanquette, a few minutes drive or about 45 minutes walk and is on our side of the town. Home games are generally played on a Sunday, and adult tickets are about 7 Euros. It’s 2 Euros for a beer from the bar underneath the main stand.

There’s always a good family atmosphere at the matches and at the game we watched today the hosts beat Angouleme (who are currently the league leaders), it was a great effort by the Sarlat team.

More information and news on fixtures can be found on the rugby club’s website : CASPN

Allez Sarlat!

Le Tour – Stage 18

On Friday 20th we cycled along the Voie Verte from Sarlat to Souillac to watch stage 18 of the Tour! We had a great day watching the Caravane procession and then cheering first David Millar in the breakaway and then the Sky team and Wiggo in yellow in the main peloton.

After that we cycled up to a bar in the town and watched the sprint finish on TV where Cav put in a storming performance to take the win!

A great day with a brilliant win for Sky, topped off a few days later with another Sky win in Paris and a British one-two overall with Wiggo and Froome.

We can’t wait until the 2013 Tour, and hopefully it will pass close by again, so look out for next year’s route as we will be doing special rates for holiday accommodation at La Blanquette for fans of Le Tour!

Le Tour – La Route!

The route has been announced with full details of the roads and towns it passes through. Although stage 18 doesn’t pass the doorstep of La Blanquette the route does pass through Souillac which is only 20km away. The finish is at Brive, which is only 50km away, so the choice is whether to go to Souillac and watch the climb on the Côte de Souillac or whether to go to Brive and try and get close to see the sprint finish!

The Gîtes and La Juin Juette are booked for the period of the tour this year but look out for next year’s route as we will be doing special rates for holiday accomodation for fans of Le Tour!

Allez Cav, Wiggo et Froome!

La Voie Verte – cycle route

Cycling the Voie Verte

Cycling the Voie Verte

La Voie Verte, or ‘Green Lane’ cycle route, is a great project that has developed almost 25km of cycle path largely along the banks of the Dordogne.

Between Sarlat and Cazoulès, with a detour through Groléjac, the route  has been put together using pathways along a disused railway. Travelling along the route you will discover the titanic effort by railway workers to carve their way through the rocks and the soil to build the old Perigord railway.

The route is a relaxing one on mostly level ground ideal for exploring the area at a leisurely pace!

Click here for the map/guide which also shows some great circuits around the Dordogne and Périgord Noir area.

If you’d like to explore the route, we offer cycle hire with full delivery and collection service!

Le Tour!

If you didn’t already know, the incomparable Tour de France will be passing very close by to La Blanquette!

The official route will not be released until some time in June but we can’t wait to find out if the route will pass our doorstep! Wherever the route is it will only be a few kilometres away and we will be there to shout on the Sky team with its largely British contingent and the new team Argos-Shimano 1t4i team on their Felt steeds…

Stay posted – as soon as we know the confirmed route it will be relayed here!
