Market Days in the Dordogne

When visiting the region a trip to a local market is not to be missed. Many regional products are available such as great cheeses and great wines which we can recommend, as well as the more typical Périgordine fare like truffles, walnuts and foie-gras. The markets are bigger in the Summer months but they can get particularly busy with tourists during July and August.

Markets can be found in the area on the following days :

  • Monday : Beynac (Jun-Sep), Les Eyzies (Apr-Oct), Montignac (Jul-Aug), Périgueux
  • Tuesday : Cénac, Le Bugue, Salignac (Apr-Sep), Périgueux
  • Wednesday : Sarlat, Bergerac, Cadouin, Montignac, Périgueux, Siorac, Hautefort, Ste. Nathalene (Jul-Aug)
  • Thursday : Domme, Lalinde, Meyrals (Summer), St Julien de Lampon, Terrasson, Périgueux
  • Friday : Le Buisson, La Roque Gageac (May-Sep), Périgueuex
  • Saturday : Sarlat, Belves, Bergerac, Le Bugue, Montignac, Périguex, Gourdon
  • Sunday : Calviac (Jun-Aug), Carsac (Jun-Sep), Daglan, Marquay (Jul-Aug), Rouffignac, St-Cyprien, St-Genies

St Cyprien on Market Day

Sundays are market day in pretty Saint Cyprien, a picturesque town nestled on the hillside that slopes down to the Dordogne valley. The market stretches along the high street from the Mairie to just below the imposing ‘Eglise Abbatiale’ or Abbey-style church.

Unfortunately the day was a little rainy when we visited (as can be seen from the photo!) but there were still plenty of stalls of interest. Surprisingly there were a good selection of seafood stalls selling oysters and mussels as well as vendors selling traditional Périgordine fare.

St Cyprien is on the main route between Sarlat and Bergerac and is about a 30 minute drive from La Blanquette.

Christmas Market in Sarlat

It’s just under a month before the Christmas Market opens in Sarlat!

From Saturday 8 to Saturday 29 December 2012, a big Christmas market is organised with themed timber chalets, offering all sorts of goodies and Christmas fare. (We’re looking forward to some nice warm mulled wine and roasted chestnuts!)

For kids and adults, many free events are planned for the three weekends: a toy library, Christmas tales, Christmas cookery courses, magic shows, skating rink (also looking forward to having a go on this!) and concerts.

So if you’re planning a Winter break visit to Sarlat to browse around the market, to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas we are offering a 12% discount on our accommodation rates for those wishing to stay in the Gites.

Just mention ‘Christmas Market Discount’ when making your booking enquiry!

Shopping in Sarlat

Sarlat-la-Canéda has many shops and boutiques within the main town centre. Several large brand chain stores (like Esprit, Burton) can be found on the Rue de la République. However the best finds are the small boutiques and traditional food stores that can be found along the cobbled streets of the old town by just stepping off the Rue de la République and exploring the alleys.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays the town has a great market which sets up all along the streets of the town centre. It’s a little larger on Saturdays and on both days driving and parking in the centre can be busy.

It’s very very busy from June to September but also can be very busy in December when there is a Christmas market.
