On the South of the Dordogne river, between Sarlat and Souillac, set in an unspoiled countryside above the village, stands the Château de Fénelon, one of the most beautiful castles in the Périgord Noir.
This visit was recommended to us by some guests who stayed with us and who had visited many in the area and felt that this was very authentically presented and was also less busy with other visitors. They thought it was their favourite château visit of all during their stay.
We had to agree, the castle itself is very well kept and could be lived in today! There are stunning views of the valley from it’s ramparts and inside the rooms are filled with period pieces and interesting antiquities. There is a fine collection of arms and armours together withs some beautiful furniture and objets d’art dating back as far as the 15th century.
One other plus point for us is that dogs are allowed in the grounds, and the whippets had a great time exploring the nooks and crannies, although the castle cat (château chat?) gave one of our whippets a bit of a fright – we thought he had been spooked by a castle spirit until we saw the big fluffy cat in one of the dressed rooms!
